Cradle to Grave: Oral Pathology through the Lifespan

Course Description: This course is an overview of oral pathologic conditions affecting children, adults, and geriatric clients. It includes both common and uncommon conditions presented in a fun, engaging manner. Many of the images and cases presented are from Ms. Lukes’ own personal collection of lesion images accumulated over 38 years as a dental hygienist and a 28-year teaching career. Etiology, clinical appearance, treatment options and relevance to dental hygiene are included for each lesion/condition. Comparison images for inclusion in the differential diagnosis will also be presented and discussed. This course can serve as an excellent update for seasoned hygienists/dentists or a relevant review for new graduates entering the field.

Examining the "Maybe" of Adverse Pregnancy Outcome for Baby

Course Description: New revelations concerning the oral-systemic link continue to emerge, requiring dental professionals to stay abreast of this important information as we become more involved in interdisciplinary, collaborative care. The research is clear that establishing optimal oral health prior to and during pregnancy is of utmost importance for the health of mom and baby, yet many pregnant women are not accessing dental care. This course contains an overview of the research on the oral-systemic link in relation to the pregnant patient and delivery outcomes. Oral pathologies experienced by pregnant patients will be presented along with a discussion about the safety of dental procedures during pregnancy. Preventive and treatment strategies to be utilized in patient care are presented, encouraging audience engagement and participation throughout the course.

Unlocking Periodontal Health: A Holistic Guide to Periodontal Disease Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Course Description: Calling participants to a comprehensive session on Periodontal Examination, Diagnosis of Periodontal Disease, and Phases of the Periodontal Therapy. In this presentation, we will bridge the gap between evolving periodontal science and practical application, providing essential insights for dental hygienists to enhance their diagnostic skills and offer superior patient care. Participants will: 1. Delve into the key components of a comprehensive periodontal examination, including clinical and radiographical assessments. 2. Learn to apply evidence-based practices, enhancing diagnostic precision in routine dental practice. 3. Explore fundamental concepts of the recently updated classification of periodontal diseases. 4. Gain clarity on terminology changes, and understand the significance of stages, grades, distribution, and the role of risk factors. 5. Explore essential concepts about the phases and techniques of periodontal therapy, emphasizing the significance of periodontal reevaluation in the periodontal treatment. This presentation is tailored to provide oral health care providers with practical tools and knowledge. Foster a deeper understanding of periodontal examination, diagnosis, and treatment phases and learn how to effectively apply the updated diagnosis system in everyday practice. Enhance their ability to deliver optimal periodontal care to their patients.

Beyond the Basics: General Supervision Responsibilities

Course Description: Expand your local anesthesia skills beyond the basic with a unique perspective on pharmacology, anatomy, technique, technology and human factors* that contribute to positive pain control outcomes. Alternatives to common injection techniques based on anatomical advantage, such as “short needle IA”, “high IA block”, “retromolar” deliver techniques, and supplemental infiltrations will be discussed. A focus on patient assessment to include ASA Classification systems, the 2015 revised FDA Drug Labeling for Pregnancy and Lactation rules, and the 2024 American Academy if Pediatric Dentists local anesthesia guidelines will be included. Learning Objectives: 1. Apply ASA Classification systems for pre-anesthesia risk assessment. 2. Identify implications of 2015 revised FDA Drug Labeling for Pregnancy and Lactation rules on drug selection 3. Calculate safe pediatric drug doses based on the 2024 American Academy if Pediatric Dentists local anesthesia guidelines. oUnderstand relevant pharmacological properties of local anesthetic drugs and how they impact anesthesia. 4. Discuss benefits of buffering local anesthetic drugs and current methods for buffering dental cartridge. 5. Identify anatomical features that support injection technique modifications. 6. Modify current techniques to take advantage of key anatomical factors. 7. Consider non-pharmacological devices to reduce pre-injection stresses and discomfort.

Cancer 101: From Diagnosis to Survivorship and How Oral Health Impacts its Outcome

Course Description: Being told you have cancer is a devastating, life-altering event. Dental hygienists are the key oral health specialists to help patients deal with the oral side effects that come with cancer treatment and afterwards. This course will take you from cancer diagnosis to cancer survivorship and how at each stage of the cancer journey you, as a dental hygienist, can help your patients. It will also prepare you to participate as part of the multidisciplinary cancer team. Course Objectives: 1. Develop a plan to meet the oral needs of a patient with cancer before, during, and after treatment 2. Communicate and participate as part of the patient's multidisciplinary cancer team 3. Describe the different cancer treatment regiments and the oral complications caused by each one and management strategies

Mobile Dentistry, Teledentistry, Direct Access & Other Modern Opportunities for the Dental Hygienist

Course Description: In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, subsequent shutdown, and societal rebuild, the dental industry has been shaken to the core. Dental hygienists were significantly impacted as employers and dental practice owners scrambled to find creative ways to care for their patients. With up to 70% of dental practices utilizing virtual appointments during the pandemic and new systems and workflows in place, patients now expect dentistry to come to them—whether through virtual appointments or mobile delivery of care. Dental hygienists are the secret to this new way of “doing” dentistry. This course will focus on what it takes to implement virtual appointments and mobile delivery into the traditional dental practice and how the dental hygienist can take the lead in implementation and delivery of these new methods.
